This morning just before 6am once again my house was shaking but this time the intensity was greater, so immediately I went onto the internet to find out what had caused it and it was another earthquake at Karonga, this time of a magnitude of 5.9. I telephoned Karonga and there is much devastation. In Kasowa village many houses are completely wrecked, but the Pre-school is still standing. People are just crying as they have no home to stay in tonight. At the same time they are terrified - its an awful situation.
Today I had a visit from a friend who lives in Karonga. He was telling me of two fatalities. During the first earthquake the hospital in Karonga was shaking violently and all the patients who were well enough went outside. One lady had her baby on oxygen and unfortunately pulled the oxygen off and ran outside, where her baby died soon after. Another case is of a lady who was in her kitchen when the earthquake struck and the building came down on top of her and killed her. I am sure there are many more stories like this.
Please pray for the Church in Karonga and everyone who has been so badly effected. People are thanking God that the rains are not yet in Karonga as the situation would have been worse.
Blessings
Diane
